Learning Through Literature: Part 1 (~4th-8th)

Cost: A one-time registration fee of $25 per family. A $50 supply fee per child/per class. A teaching fee of $10 per class, to be prepaid at the beginning of each month. (There will be a minimum of 4 students and a maximum of 15.)

Description: Using good “living” books, this class will instill a love of learning and a desire to read. It will open the doorway that leads to personal growth and an appreciation for the wonders of the English Language. Join me on an adventure that uses chapter books to open the door to Language Arts, including; creative writing, new vocabulary, literature discussions, and much more.

Each week, students will be required to complete the following homework assignments:


  • Bring the book to class.

  • Read (may listen to an audio book, but must own a copy of the book) three chapters of an assigned quality children's literature book.

  • Come to class prepared to discuss what they have read.

  • Turn in discussion questions (may write by hand, dictate to parent, or use a word processor).

  • Study new vocabulary words.

  • Work on various writing assignments.


Class time will consist of:


  • Discussing various aspects of the book.

  • Doing activities using new vocabulary words.

  • Instruction on improving writing skills.

  • Other Language Arts related activities/worksheets.


For example, using the book, The Boxcar Children, by Gertrude Chandler Warner, our mornings might look like this...
